Chapter Twenty-Six
The tack room at the end of the stalls in the deserted stables was stifling hot, and chokingly close with accumulated dust and the smell of old moldy leather.
There had been a light on in the farmhouse when Tony passed it on foot, keeping to the grassy edge of the road for the sake of quiet. He had left his car outside of the grounds. He was certain that Doc Buchanan or his wife hadnât seen or heard him, even if they were home.
Once inside the stable he risked the beam of his pocket flashlight. There were holes in the rotted floor that made traps where you could break a leg. The narrow beam took him safely past the fifteen pungent stalls.
The door to the tack room was of heavy wood, but the last one in hadnât even bothered to put the wooden peg back in the hasp and staple, and the door hung slightly ajar.
It creaked alarmingly when he opened it just wide enough to sidle in. The flashlight showed a wooden bench, a bottomless rocker, a couple of quirts hung on nails, and two fungus-green sidesaddles set astride beams protruding from the wall.
Tony sat on the bench and cupped the tiny electric glow against his wrist watch.
Nine-fifty.
In ten more minutes heâd be through, rid of every rotten contact that had plagued him since the day he was born.
The old bastard had finally outsmarted himselfâforcing him into driving the cab last Tuesday. He was smart enough to realize it, too. He knew that Tony had him now. Heâd pay to keep murder quiet. Anybody would.
You couldnât buck the Mafia, or the Syndicate, or the Unione-Siciliano. When the cops couldnât buck them, nor the Treasury Department, nor the public, nor the F.B.I., what the hell was one lone dumb bastard with a gangster father and a gun-moll mother going to do?
Tony Ferri against the world!
He lit a cigarette and cupped it in his hand, army style.
The big boys never let you quit once you were in on the things he knew. You could never love anybody, never have a wife and kids, never hold down an honest job, never get a good nightâs sleep.
âWe need a good driver for this caper, Tony. Youâre the best there is. You wouldnât want anything to happen to Rosa, would you?â
Nothing was going to happen to Rosa. Heâd damn well find out before he took the dough why that blind man had been sent to talk to her.
There was something dirty back of everything. Heâd learned that long ago. Angles. Everything was full of angles.
God, it was a pity that both he and Yates werenât killed in that train. That might have been yesterday. He began to wonder if they really had any idea at all as to how much he knew.
With the dough behind them they could take over anything. Hadnât they tried it with the movies, too? Extortion. Blackmail. Threats. Seduction, or just plain rape. Start âem on reefers and next
